First, I'm a huge advocate of classical training for drawing. I haven't seen any of your other art, so maybe you've already done this, but you should buy a good anatomy book and learn the form of a human body. Even though you may not want to draw classically, it'll help you learn dynamic poses, and how to make them believable. One huge problem with many anime-style artists is the static pose (uninteresting or plain; for instance, a girl standing with her arms crossed behind her). I feel this picture is very static since it's front-on and symmetrical. Many anatomy books have detailed poses that you can imitate.
Speaking of imitation, that's a great way to learn new techniques and build your style. Try looking at the art of your favorite artists and imitating what you like. That doesn't mean copy though, and it probably isn't a good idea to upload art that is very similar to another person on a forum or website. Think of imitating artists as practice, and once you have the techniques down, draw something original to show everyone.
Imitating also builds your style. There is hardly anything original in art. Even your most favorite artists who have a unique-looking style have taken inspiration from other artists. It's just fine to take a line style from one type of art and use it, see how you like it, and keep it or throw it out. You should always be looking for what your own style is.
Before we can tell you a name for your character, you should tell us more about her. What is she like? Does she use magic, or is she a normal student? Is her pet real or is it her imagination? Is her pet magic? What does she like to do for fun? What's her personality like? These are only a few questions you should think about when making a character.
